If you’re planning on leaving the country for your next vacation, you’re going to want to make sure you’re prepared. The first step in getting ready for an international trip is to make sure your passport is up to date! Here we’ve put together a handy guide with everything you need to know about passports to help your next vacation go as smoothly as possible.
*These are all tips for United States Passports. Passport guidelines may vary by country.
If you do have a passport…
Make sure to double check that the expiration date is at least six months after your final day of travel. Most countries will not permit you to travel if your passport expires before then, and some airlines will not allow you to board. If you do need to renew your passport, make sure you do it at least 6-8 weeks in advance. It is possible to get it expedited, but save yourself the hassle and renew as early as possible! To renew your passport, you can send in your application by mail, or make an appointment at a passport agency or center for expedited service.
To renew by mail, you will need to send in:
- Application (Form DS-82)
- Old passport
- Color passport photo
- Fee payment
If you don’t have a passport…
To get a new passport, you must apply at a local passport acceptance facility, which also include post offices, libraries, or county courts. An appointment may be required at certain passport acceptance facilities.
To apply, you will need to provide:
- Application form (Form DS-11)
- Proof of U.S. citizenship
- Government issued photo ID
- Color passport photo
- Fee payment
You can either fill out the application form online or in person, but do not sign the form until you are instructed to do so when you are applying in person. To get your new passport, it will take 6-8 weeks for routine service, and 2-3 weeks if expedited. Again, be sure to apply for your passport as early as possible to prevent any stress!
Passport Photos:
A passport photo is needed to renew or apply for a passport. A good passport photo is important, because if the photo is unacceptable your passport application or renewal process could be delayed. The photo must be taken within 6 months, on a plain white background, and you are not allowed to wear glasses or hats. For the full list of photo requirements, click here.
You can get your passport photo taken at the following locations:
- Shipping and Delivery Centers
- Pharmacies/Membership Warehouse Clubs
- U.S. Passport Offices
