Review of Princess Cruise Los Angelos, CA to Hawaii and back.
Overall, the cruise was very nice as would just about any cruise and my wife and I enjoyed ourselves.
The cabin with a balcony was nice and comfortable and was well maintained by our steward.
Overall the food was good, some meals were very good and others not so much. We ate most of our dinners in the Davinci dining room which is one
one of three main dining rooms on the ship. We could never get reservations for any of the others, The food is the same.
However we were able to reserve the same table every night and out waitress was wonderful. We did eat at 2 of the speciality
restauarants and those meals were very good. Of course we paid extra for them.
However, there were several things that we feel were disapointing, some were big, most were just annoying but, somethings were really good.
1. We paid for transfers to our pre-stay hotel to the ship and to the airport. No one met us at the airport when we arrived. This was a major
problem. We tried to contact Princess and finally did with some difficulty. Thet had no ansswer, they told us to take a cab and get
a receipt and they would reimburse us but, no mention of a reimbursement for this error or our very agravating efforts to get to the
Marriott at LAX. They didn't bother to mention that to get a cab (or Uber or Lyft) at LAX you need to take a shuttle bus to a building
and then once again reload you luggage into a cab. We had a lot of luggage and this was just too much work. We were finally able to find
out where we could get a shuttle by Marriott to the hotel. Of course it was on another level. And again when we are ready to leave the ship
they messed up again and gave us luggage tags for guests with "independent" transfers, meaning not by Princess, Fortunately, we realized the
error and went to Guest Services for a fix. They recognized the error and gave us the right tags but, offered no reason for the mix-up.
2. Once at the Mariott the Princess desk had our room key but no other record of our trip. We had to wait until the next
day for them to have a record of our cruise, just annoying.
3. On the ship, we found our cabin on the Caribe deck. Only a couple of annoyances. In the entire cabin there were just 4 electrical
outlets, one behind the TV and not meant for our use. One in the bathroom for which we had little use as the hair dryer was at the desk.
The other two were at the desk but, so close together they could not be used at the same time. Considering that we had 2 cell phones,
a computer and other devices to plug in, it was very annoying. They could easily fix this and do as most hotels have done, just replace
the lamps next to the bed with a lamp with built in recepticals as well as USB ports (there are none of those in the cabin). However, the closet in the
cabin was wonderful. Plenty of hanging space and space for the suitcases.
4. There was no coffee maker in the room as well as no ice bucket, again just annoying. One very nice feature, as you step out of the bed at night, a light
at your feet comes on for a short time.
5. They use a medallion in lieu of a cards as your identifier and cash card and door key. While the software is good, it needs a LOT of improvements.
It is sometimes difficult to use and hard to find things. It is also supposed to be coordinated with the room TV but, is in only
some cases. The TV will refer you back to your personal device (APP on your cell phone). You need the WI-FI for it to work and that was sometimes, iffy.
6. For the fist few days, there were lines everywhere. Even if you had a dinner reservation, the staff seemed to be overwhelmed and unable
to seat people fast enough or fast at all. We solved the problem by making a reservation for the same table every night and
therefore didn't have to wait in line. We were really fortunate (lucky), we were assigned to a table in a small, sort of, private, room next to the hosts desk and
the waitress, Koreen Ramos was excellent. Her assistant Dragon Peric was very efficient. Every meal there was a joy for the service, mostly the food was good.
7. We purchased the PLUS package that included drinks ($12.00 or less) and crew tips. Seemed like a good deal. Here's the (small) problem, sodas are included if
they are opened and poured into a glass by the bartender. If you want a can, guess what, you will be charged. It only includes wine by the glass not bottled.
The charge for the soda is a very small charge, no big deal, just nickle & dime annoying and unnecessary as it's easier to give a can then pour into a glass.
8. They do not provide maps of the ports. The map in the room, on the door, is for emergency escape. Why not put another one on the door for all ship locations.
All ports in HI were container load/unload ports with nothing nearby. The stop in Maui was disappointing. We assumed the
port was near or in the city of Lahaina. We visited Lahaina a while ago and it is a delightful tourist town. In fact the port where we docked was on the opposite side of
the island in a container port, because the port in Lahaina was closed. No transportation to Lahaina was provided. They could have offered some shuttle buses.
About $150.00 gets you a cab ride to Lahaina, each way.
9. The ship is old. While is was remodeled not too long ago, it needs more. Several windows (double paned insulated) had broken seals and were filled with moisture.
They can't be fixed and need to be replaced.
10. The biggest annoyance was, to our surprise, the fact that the trip from LA to HI over Christmas, it was cold (chilly would be better). Mostly too cold
to use the pool except a couple of days in HI and then only by the hearty or young. The ship has 3 pools, all outside and none inside.
11. Some suggestions. The shows and the entertainment venues are all really enjoyable but, for some of us older folks, it's tough to stay up and watch.
Why not broadcast the shows over the in-house TVs. In the "old days" every ship provided a map of the ship so us cruisers could get used to where everything is
located. Some form of map would be a really good idea even though they have maps at every elevator. Too many times I got to the elevator only to find that I went the
wrong way.
12. The entertainment, for the most part was really good. The shows by Jesse & Colleen Kezemek were exceptional. The venue shows that we saw were all good, the only
problem was when they did a show in the Piazza (the center court). It's just too small and most of the time we just got to hear the music from behind a post.
13. The only problem with the entertainment was that the band, especially the piano player, were too loud and seemed to be trying to be louder than the entertainers.
