Our Experience on Azamara Onward: A More Immersive Way to Explore Greece

There is something special about seeing the Greek islands from the sea. One moment, you are walking through centuries-old streets or swimming in warm, clear water; the next, you are back onboard with a glass in hand, watching another storied coastline drift into view.

We experienced that rhythm aboard Azamara Onward during an eight-night Greece Intensive cruise from Athens, and it gave us exactly what we had hoped for: a relaxed, intimate ship paired with an itinerary built for deeper exploration. Since we had sailed on larger ships more recently, we were eager to get back onboard a smaller ship. The sailing was classy but comfortable, personal without being formal, and intimate without ever feeling crowded.

Our sailing visited Syros, Patmos, Rhodes, Marmaris, Agios Nikolaos, Santorini, and Monemvasia before returning to Athens. With extended stays until 10:00 p.m. in Rhodes and Santorini, we had more time to immerse ourselves in the destinations instead of watching the clock all day. Those longer evenings, combined with warm service and an easygoing atmosphere onboard, shaped the entire experience.

The size of Azamara Onward was one of the main reasons we were excited for this cruise. We wanted a more personal experience than we had found on larger ships, and we noticed the difference almost immediately. The ship felt calm and easy to navigate, and we never encountered the sense of congestion that can sometimes come with a much larger vessel.

What stood out even more was the connection that developed throughout the sailing. We learned our cabin attendant’s name, and he learned ours. We crossed paths with the same crew members and fellow guests throughout the week, which created a friendly sense of familiarity. By the end of the cruise, it felt less like we were moving anonymously through a floating resort and more like we were part of a shared travel experience.

That personal attention did not feel stiff or overly formal. Azamara Onward struck a lovely balance: polished enough to feel special, but comfortable enough that we could settle in and truly relax.

We stayed in a Verandah cabin, which proved to be an excellent choice for an eight-night itinerary. The amount of storage was one of the first things we appreciated. There was enough room to unpack, organize our belongings, and make the space feel like home rather than living out of suitcases for the week.

The private verandah was another highlight. On a destination-rich sailing, it gave us a quiet place to take in the changing scenery between ports and enjoy a little time to ourselves. For travelers considering a longer Azamara voyage, we found the combination of useful storage and private outdoor space especially worthwhile.

Our favorite dining venue was Discoveries Restaurant, the ship’s main dining room. Both Discoveries and Windows Café featured rotating menus and buffets inspired by the destinations we visited, as well as other global destinations. Throughout the sailing, we had plenty of opportunities to enjoy Greek cuisine onboard, which allowed us to continue exploring the region’s flavors even after returning to the ship. We looked forward to seeing what cuisine would be featured each day, while familiar favorites were still available when we wanted something dependable.

A few dishes became instant standouts. The filet mignon was so tender it practically melted in our mouths, but the French onion soup earned the title of our most repeated order. We had it every night we dined at Discoveries because it was simply that good.

The variety suited the pace of the trip. After a full day exploring ruins, museums, beaches, or old towns, it was nice to return to a meal that still felt like part of the experience rather than just a necessity between activities.

This was a wonderfully relaxed cruise, and some of our favorite onboard moments were the simplest. Time by the pool or in the whirlpool tubs became the perfect way to recharge after a day ashore. Because the ship never felt overly crowded, slowing down actually felt possible.

We also spent a great deal of time in The Living Room. Its wide ocean views paired beautifully with the comfortable feeling of a shared lounge. We played board games, challenged ourselves with the daily Sudoku, listened to live music, and stopped by for tapas-style snacks throughout the day.

The daily Sudoku became a small ritual for us. It was not the kind of headline attraction that sells a cruise, but it is exactly the sort of detail we remember fondly. The Living Room gave us a place to gather, relax, and enjoy the journey between destinations.

Two of the most memorable events of our sailing were White Night and the AzAmazing Evening, and we are very glad we made time for both.

White Night transformed the pool deck into a celebration beneath the open sky. A massive buffet featured special dishes, including grilled lobster and an impressive selection of desserts. The Signature Singers performed, along with our Cruise Director, who was also a talented singer. He performed throughout the sailing, and that extra touch made the onboard entertainment feel even more personal. The evening culminated with crew members parading around the Sun Deck, bringing guests and crew together in a joyful celebration.

Our AzAmazing Evening took place onboard while we were in Rhodes and brought Greek culture directly to the ship. Local singers and dancers performed to Greek music in a lively, engaging show. After spending the day surrounded by the history of Rhodes, experiencing its music and dance that evening felt like a fitting continuation of the destination.

Rhodes was our favorite port of the cruise. Exploring the Old Town felt like walking through layers of history, with ancient streets, stone walls, and ruins around seemingly every corner. We took our time wandering and absorbing the atmosphere rather than trying to rush through a long checklist.

We ended the day at Elli Beach, which made a beautiful contrast to the historic city. The warm salt water was comfortable and inviting, and swimming there after a day of exploring became one of our favorite memories. Because the ship remained in Rhodes until 10:00 p.m., we could enjoy the destination with more breathing room and still return onboard for the AzAmazing performance.

Syros ranked second among our favorite ports because of its relaxed character. It did not feel as though every moment needed to be scheduled. The island invited us to slow down, take in our surroundings, and enjoy a gentler introduction to the voyage.

That laid-back feeling aligned perfectly with the atmosphere of the cruise itself. Syros showed us that a memorable port day does not always require a packed excursion schedule. Sometimes, the destination’s everyday rhythm is the experience.

Monemvasia was our third favorite and one of the most atmospheric stops of the trip. Entering its historic setting felt like stepping back in time. Its preserved character and dramatic sense of place made it easy to imagine the stories that had unfolded there over the centuries.

By this point in the sailing, we had already encountered history in several forms, but Monemvasia still felt distinctive. It was an ideal final port and a reminder of just how much variety can fit into a Greece-focused itinerary.

When the ship called at Agios Nikolaos, we chose not to explore the port itself. Instead, we took a full-day excursion to Knossos Palace and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.

This was one of the most meaningful days for our interest in history and mythology. Visiting Knossos brought the world of ancient Crete to life, while the museum added context to what we had seen. Together, the two sites created a fuller picture of Minoan civilization and became part of the larger historical thread running through our voyage.

In Santorini, we explored Oia, known for its whitewashed buildings, blue-domed churches, and sweeping caldera views. Santorini is one of Greece’s most recognizable destinations, but our visit had an unusual advantage: Azamara Onward was the only cruise ship there that day, something we were told was rare.

Having fewer cruise visitors made the experience feel more manageable and gave us room to appreciate Oia’s famous scenery. The ship remained until 10:00 p.m., allowing us to enjoy the island beyond a short daytime stop.
